Follicular Study

A Follicular Study is a series of ultrasound scans used to monitor the growth and development of ovarian follicles during a woman’s menstrual cycle. It is an important diagnostic tool in fertility management, helping to track ovulation and determine the most fertile period for conception. This study is especially useful for women who are trying to conceive naturally or undergoing fertility treatments.

The process typically begins a few days after the start of the menstrual cycle. Regular ultrasound scans are performed at intervals to observe the size and maturity of the follicles in the ovaries. Once a dominant follicle reaches an optimal size, ovulation is expected to occur, and the timing for intercourse or fertility procedures such as IUI can be planned accordingly.

Key purposes of a follicular study include:

  • Monitoring follicle growth and maturation
  • Identifying the timing of ovulation
  • Assessing the response to ovulation induction medications
  • Evaluating uterine lining (endometrium) for implantation readiness
  • Detecting issues like delayed or absent ovulation
