IUI – Intrauterine Insemination

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) is a commonly used fertility treatment that involves placing specially prepared sperm directly into a woman’s uterus to increase the chances of fertilization. It is a simple, minimally invasive procedure often recommended for couples facing mild infertility issues, unexplained infertility, or problems related to ovulation or sperm motility.

The process begins with monitoring the woman’s ovulation cycle, either naturally or with the help of ovulation induction medications. At the time of ovulation, a semen sample from the male partner (or donor) is collected and processed in a laboratory to select the healthiest and most active sperm. These sperm are then inserted directly into the uterus using a thin, flexible catheter, bringing them closer to the egg and improving the likelihood of conception.

Key aspects of IUI include:

  • Monitoring ovulation for precise timing of the procedure
  • Preparation and selection of high-quality sperm
  • Direct placement of sperm into the uterus
  • Minimally invasive and quick procedure
  • Often combined with ovulation induction for better success rates
  • Suitable for certain fertility conditions such as mild male factor infertility or cervical issues
