NT scan

The NT scan (Nuchal Translucency scan) is a specialized ultrasound performed during early pregnancy, typically between 11 and 14 weeks of gestation. It is used to measure the fluid-filled space at the back of the baby’s neck, known as the nuchal translucency. This measurement helps assess the risk of chromosomal abnormalities such as Down syndrome, as well as other genetic conditions and certain congenital heart defects.

The NT scan is a safe, non-invasive procedure that uses high-frequency sound waves to create detailed images of the developing fetus. It is often combined with maternal blood tests as part of first-trimester screening to provide a more accurate risk assessment. While the scan does not provide a definitive diagnosis, it helps identify pregnancies that may require further testing, such as diagnostic procedures.

Key purposes of the NT scan include:

  • Measuring nuchal translucency thickness in the fetus
  • Assessing the risk of chromosomal abnormalities
  • Early detection of certain structural anomalies
  • Confirming gestational age and fetal viability
  • Supporting informed decision-making for further tests
