Obstetrics early

Early obstetric ultrasound is a diagnostic scan performed during the first trimester of pregnancy, usually between 5 to 12 weeks of gestation. It is one of the first and most important assessments to confirm pregnancy and evaluate the early development of the embryo or fetus. This scan provides essential information about the location, viability, and progress of the pregnancy.

The primary purpose of an early obstetric ultrasound is to confirm an intrauterine pregnancy and rule out conditions such as ectopic pregnancy. It also helps in detecting the fetal heartbeat, determining the number of fetuses (single or multiple pregnancy), and accurately estimating gestational age and expected due date. The scan may be performed transabdominally or transvaginally, depending on the stage of pregnancy and clarity required.

Key purposes of early obstetric ultrasound include:

  • Confirming pregnancy and its location within the uterus
  • Detecting fetal heartbeat and assessing viability
  • Estimating gestational age and expected delivery date
  • Identifying multiple pregnancies (twins or more)
  • Detecting early complications such as miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy
  • Monitoring early fetal development
